About Jay Chatman
Jay Chatman is the author of the Shades of Shadé series, including capital PLEASURES and The Yard. His stories explore ambition, relationships, vulnerability, accountability, and the complicated choices people make while trying to become who they believe they are supposed to be.
A graduate of North Carolina Central University, Jay draws heavily from HBCU culture, Black professional life, music, friendship, romance, and the places that shape us long after we leave them.
Before becoming a novelist, Jay built a career in marketing and advertising technology, where storytelling, strategy, and understanding people became part of his everyday work. That same curiosity now drives his fiction.
Music is also central to the way Jay tells stories. Each novel is written with a soundtrack in mind, blending classic R&B, hip hop, and newer artists to create an experience that extends beyond the page.
Through Chatman Vision, Jay is building a creative platform centered on books, storytelling, culture, and future adaptations across media.
When he is not writing, Jay is usually thinking about the next story, the next soundtrack, or the next place worth returning to.
